Dimension-Specific Voice Quality Indices

Four acoustic scores from a sustained vowel: severity, breathiness, roughness, strain.

These indices are computed from acoustic parameters of a sustained vowel using regression coefficients published in Lucero, Journal of Voice (2026). External validation on independent samples is essential before clinical adoption.

About these four indices

• Severity Index: Overall dysphonia severity from six acoustic parameters (log shimmer, GNE, Hno-6000, log period SD, F0, HNR-D).
• Breathiness Index: Turbulent-noise breathiness from three parameters (CPPS, GNE, Hno-6000).
• Roughness Index: Vibratory irregularity from five parameters (log shimmer, H1-H2, GNE, log period SD, log jitter). First published composite acoustic index for the roughness dimension.
• Strain Index: Hyperfunctional/strained phonation from six parameters (HNR, F0, log period SD, tilt, H1-H2, GNE). First published composite acoustic index for the strain dimension.
